Dear Members of the Rockport Community Preservation Committee,

I am writing to convey my wholehearted support for CPC funding to restore the historic steeple at Pigeon Cove Chapel, a cherished landmark in our town that embodies both the rich history and unique scenic character of Rockport.

For well over 150 years, Pigeon Cove Chapel has stood as a visual anchor and gathering place in our community. Beyond its historic value as a classic example of Carpenter Gothic architecture, the Chapel has long served as a place where neighbors and visitors alike connect in community.

The steeple is an integral part of the Chapel’s historical integrity and contributes significantly to the distinct skyline of Pigeon Cove. Its presence rising above Granite Street is part of what makes the Cove so picturesque and quintessentially New England. Rockport’s scenic beauty, especially along the Pigeon Cove waterfront and the Essex Coastal Scenic Byway, consistently draws locals and visitors who savor views of the Atlantic and the historic architectural environment nestled within it.

The Chapel’s steeple is not merely decorative; it is a symbol of continuity. For generations, it has signaled important life events and served as a visual reference point for residents and mariners alike. Preserving it will ensure that this landmark continues to contribute to Rockport’s character and to the sense of place that makes our town so beloved.

In addition to its scenic value, Pigeon Cove Chapel plays an ongoing role in community life. As a community of faith known for generations as “the friendly little chapel by the sea,” the Chapel offers fellowship and support for people from diverse walks of life. Its ministry and activities provide spiritual enrichment and social connection that strengthen the fabric of our local community.

Investing in the restoration of the steeple reflects Rockport’s broader commitment to community preservation—honoring our history while keeping our town vibrant and welcoming for current and future generations. I strongly urge the Community Preservation Committee to recommend and support funding this project.

Thank you for your thoughtful consideration.

Sincerely,
